How to create URLs to share files from your web server Cpanel

In my previous video, I showed how to transfer folders using Filezilla from my computer to my web server. Now I wish to create URLs for them so that I can share those files with others in my emails in my Blog posts.

We will go to my Hostgator Cpanel via File Manager & see the file I transfered “Client Info” – notice there is a gap between the 2 words which requires special handling compared with a single or run-together word.

In your document, you would write your domain name, add a forward slash then the file name if it was a single word such as “clientinfo”

but as “Client Info” is 2 words, it is necessary to add “%20” between the 2 words otherwise it won’t work. The URL is case sensitive also ….

If you don’t like seeing the %20 in the filename, all you have to do is rename the file or directory to something without spaces. Typically, this is done with dashes, underscores, or by simply not having the space in the name. Examples: Client-Info, Client_Info, ClientInfo. You would of course have to change any references such as links in your website to reflect this as well.

If I want to use the URL in my Blog, I paste the link into my post, highlight it, & create a link using the box to insert it.

How to transfer files from Computer
to your web server Cpanel with Filezilla

Once you have the FileZilla client downloaded and activated on your computer, enter the domain name in the address field (you can also use the server’s IP address). The username and the password you need to type in are the same as the ones you use to log in to your cPanel. The FTP port is 21 and is filled in automatically.

Click Quickconnect and the file listing will appear. Find the www (it is a symbolic link to public_html) directory and double click on it.

Then, select the files from the left side to be uploaded and drag-and-drop them under the www folder on the right side. Wait for the transfer to be completed.
The difference between the filezilla client and the filezilla server is that the client is designed to allow the users to manage their files via FTP access while the server version allows you to run the FTP service on your hosting machine.

FileZilla client is used to connect to a web server, FileZilla server is used ~as~ the Web Server; you can’t connect to other web servers with it, but you can connect to it with other clients – In other words, to connect to a web server, you need the client, the server is useless for that purpose.

Pick the client if you want to transfer files. Get the server if you want to make files available for others.

We will use Filezilla Client to connect with our web server to transfer our chosen files – Filezilla server is used to make files available to others & will be the topic of another video
